ank is sitting at the bar in the billiards room of Spirit Bear Lodge. Max is alternately shooting pool and manning the bar. He’s been mixing Cuba Libres and acting like he’s just hanging out, but Hank isn’t fooled. He knows if he tried to leave, Max wouldn’t allow it. He was rude when he blocked him from following him upstairs when he took the girl’s lunch up, even used some signal Hank didn’t see to set his ugly dog to guard him. All he knew was that the dog sat up, alert, staring at him. When he tried to outstare the mutt to see if it would back down, it raised its hackles and growled. It didn’t take its eyes off him until Max came back.

Totally unfair. He has to see her. Needs to see her! The black nub deep in his brain has been squirming and stretching its legs for days. Barely even quieted down after the session with Astrid, the old bastard cutting that short made sure of it. Even admiring the bite mark on his hand, remembering Astrid’s teeth clamping down on it as he was shoving the rag in her mouth doesn’t help. Now the black nub is bigger. Its eyes are starting to glow. It’s starting to whisper. That’s new, and damned unpleasant, like being in a room full of people, all of them whispering, but you can’t quite make out what they’re saying. He’s sure if he had time with the girl upstairs he could do something to make it stop. He’s the one who got her for them in the first place, after all. All he wants is a poke. Maybe tease her a little with some love bites. Can’t do more than that, not here. But Max ignores his arguments.

He ponders overpowering Max. He thinks he’s as fit and as strong as Max is, but Max has size and reach on him. He’d have to take him by surprise. And then there’s that big ugly dog of his, just lying on the dog bed. It looks like it’s sleeping, but perks up whenever Max moves, and its posture during their staring contest gave him pause. He abandons the idea. Or at least puts it on a back burner. If Max goes for a piss or maybe takes the dog out for a piss—but that hasn’t happened yet. How far would Max go to keep him from leaving? He’s packing, but would he shoot him? Can’t rule it out.

Even if he snuck outside, even with the V-8 in his truck, would he get to the fence before Max’s five-liter Mustang caught him? He wouldn’t have time, or the keys, to unlock the gate. If he crashed through it, would it wreck his truck? Does he care, as long as it keeps on going?

A better idea would be to get into the little cabinet by the back door where the keys for the Lodge’s vehicles are kept, then get into the garage and find the right vehicle … which one? The Hummer, maybe.
